mntssouptonutsai.jpg (62143 bytes) The progress of a projecting mount from raw rod to finished product. First, the rod is cut into slabs. Then on each piece a hole is made, threaded, and the end "faced off" so the plane formed by the face is perfectly perpendicular to the axis of the thread. This must be done at the same time as the thread (i.e. before the slab is removed from whatever it is held with.) The facing means the end of the mount will perfectly butt up against the wood to which it will be attached. Then the threaded, faced slab is put on a "pin" to make the rough shape. Lastly, the nearly finished projecting mount is fitted to the wood, cut to length, and the final shape is made, then polished.

pcsolesouptonutsai.jpg (59440 bytes) The progress of a pipe chanter sole from slab to finished product. Into the slab a hole is drilled and threaded. The end is then "faced off" so the plane formed by the face is perfectly perpendicular to the axis of the thread. This must be done at the same time as the thread (i.e. before the slab is removed from whatever it is held with.) The facing means the end of the sole will perfectly butt up against the wood to which it will be attached. Then the threaded, faced slab is put on a "pin" to make the rough shape. Lastly, the nearly finished sole is fitted to the pipe chanter, cut to length, and the final shape is made, then polished.
